What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots. They work to support false teeth in the mouth so they will feel more like natural teeth. They are an excellent option for people who are missing teeth, whether they require a complete set or just wish to have a single tooth replaced.

Most dental implants are manufactured from titanium. Titanium is a suitable metal for dental implants given that it is compatible with body tissues. Dental implants are a well-established and safe dental care treatment, popular around the world.

There are different types of dental implant treatment, including endosteal and subperiosteal, depending on whether or not the patient has good oral health and sufficient bone in the jaw. Some people with low bone density or bone loss may require bone grafting before an implant can be placed.

Implants can also help to secure partial or complete dentures or bridges.

One of the best advancements in dental technology in the last couple of decades is the dental implant. We finally have a way to replace a missing tooth with a permanent, fully functional tooth that requires no special care. And it will look just like a natural tooth as well.

Tooth replacement with a dental implant starts by placing a slender post in the jaw in the location of the missing tooth. This is the implant itself. It will act as the root of the ceramic tooth to be placed later.

Most dental implants are made from titanium because human bone bonds well with titanium. That’s why titanium is used for most joint replacement devices. Once the implant is placed, it must be given time to heal fully and bond with the bone in the jaw.

Finally, an attachment point called an “abutment” will be fitted to the implant. Your replacement tooth will then be manufactured to match your other teeth. When this tooth is connected with the abutment, your smile will be complete once again. You’ll have no food restrictions and your implant will need no special cleaning like is needed with a bridge.

When we place implants, we take an additional step to prevent infection and speed healing.

Infection Prevention with Platelet-Rich Fibrin

At the Dental Spa, we use an innovative technique to protect your health and speed up your healing after every extraction or implant placement. We add some of your own body’s platelet-rich fibrin to the treatment location.

Platelet-rich fibrin is a component in your own blood that helps heal wounds and fight infection. It is a natural dental medicine created from your own body to promote healing.

During your visit, we take a vial of your blood and place it in a centrifuge (a spinning device to separate fluids). As the centrifuge spins, the blood separates into different layers: a red layer, a yellow-tan layer, and a yellow, almost clear layer. It’s the middle, yellow-tan layer rich in PRF that will be used to speed your healing.

The proteins in PRF protect the extraction or surgical site and provide nutrients and healing factors to improve recovery. We find that when PRF is added to an extraction site, bone grows stronger and faster and there’s a reduced chance of dry socket and the pain it causes.

When PRF is added to an implant procedure, it speeds up the integration of the implant with the bone in the jaw. The use of PRF during your treatment is another way we protect your health.

How the Dental Implant Process Works

When you choose implant dentistry from our dental practice at Jersey City Dental Spa, there are a number of different steps involved. Let's take a look at each of these below.

  • Evaluation

As noted above, there are different types of dental implant treatment available. The first step is for the patient to undergo an evaluation, in order to determine the best course of action.

A patient with healthy gum tissue, sufficient bone in the jaw, a fully grown jawbone, and good overall oral health is likely to be a good candidate for endosteal dental implants.

For a patient who does not meet these criteria, a better option is the subperiosteal procedure. In this instance, the implants are not placed in the jawbone, rather they are placed on or above the bone.

  • Placing the Implant

The next step is the place of the implant, a procedure that will differ depending on whether the patient is receiving endosteal or subperiosteal implants.

With an endosteal implant, we cut the gum to expose the jawbone, into which holes are drilled. This is where the implant post is inserted. With a subperiosteal implant, the jawbone is not drilled. Instead, the implant post is placed above or on the bone.

  • Osseointegration

After placing the implant, it is necessary to wait for enough bone growth to occur around the screw. The exact length of time this takes depends on each individual patient and case, though it is typically between two and six months.

The osseointegration allows for the natural jaw bone to strengthen and grow around the dental implant, ensuring that it remains firmly in place. The implant will then be able to function as the artificial tooth's root.

  • Abutment Placement

Another important step is the abutment placement. The abutment is a metal extender, added to the dental implant, either during the initial procedure or at a later date. The reason for this step is to connect the replacement tooth to the dental implant.

  • Placing the Tooth

After the osseointegration stage, when the healing is fully complete, an impression of the tooth is taken. This allows for the permanent replacement tooth to be made to fit properly.
